What are Orff Instruments
The distinctive part of Orff instruments is their adaptability and versatility. Xylophones are instruments that support the Orff Schulwerk pedagogy. This “child-centered’ way of learning music began to be developed in 1928 by K. Maendler under the direction of composer Carl Orff.
Carl Orff said, “Experience first, then intellectualise.” A fun experience through instruments that will accommodate their skill levels is the foundation for a positive learning method. These instruments are unique as they help teach rhythm as well as pitch.
They aid in inclusive education and require less technical skills -this is where the players practice more along the lines of gross motor skills and less on fine motor skills, unlike the piano or violin. This enables all types of learners to play, discover and experience music.
The affordability, size of the instruments and the fast learning curve enable a school/organisation to equip every child with an instrument to play on.
